It has been 7 years that I had switched to ubuntu linux from windows. At that time I was using windows xp and windows 7 was not enough perfect for me upgrading to. But I was desperate to move out from xp, with its slow booting / shut down time, irritable “not responding” programs (for which I needed to use the task manager every now and then, to close those) and on top of them regular virus issues.
For many project requirements I required internet on my PCs and I had to also frequently use client CD/DVDs and USBs on them. So this virus problem was getting on my nerves. I invested in two three popular anti-virus / anti-malware solutions. But still I was not satisfied. I had no authority on my own computers, they were on their own. Everyday I was worried, what new issue will turn up today during work.
Suddenly I got my hands on “Ubuntu”, debian based linux OS created by open-source software developers, at that time the version I installed was 8.04.4 LTS (Hardy Heron). I started dual booting to windows and ubuntu, and was amazed to see how simple my life can be with a visibly fast OS and less drama everyday. After six months of using my PC like this, I said to myself lets give it a go and reformatted my hard drive with only one OS Ubuntu and entered into a new world of real freedom. In between I had tried few popular linux OSs but came back again to ubuntu. I have sticked to it after that, and can confirm I still feel free as a bird.
Now I use ubuntu for all my production computers (desktops, laptops) and even a 9 year old compaq presario runs on my kitchen desk perfectly with lubuntu (a low grade version of ubuntu). Right now I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and it’s perfect for me.
What I like about ubuntu linux is :
- You can get up and running within 1 hr of installation and basic customisations.
- It can run from the DVD or USB in Live-CD mode.
- You can download the OS for free from their official website ubuntu.com
- Networking and sharing internet connection is so so easy.
- Default installation comes with some common ready-to-use software solutions.
- Loads of softwares and applications ready to be downloaded from Ubuntu Software Center, mostly free.
- For any problem there is a strong community to help you through.
- It’s secure out-of-the-box.
- It really stands by the “Ubuntu Philosophy“.
From my personal ubuntu experience, I have motivated my team members to switch over to ubuntu in our office. At Eyedealab we regularly use, ubuntu linux for web development job, design job and back-office job and web servers for production sites and we are really happy that we switched from windows.
So if you are using windows 7 or higher as your operating system, you can upgrade to windows 10 for free but if you are caught up with windows XP, you can give Ubuntu a try, you may like it
